Emirates Water and Electricity Company and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company have signed a major agreement to expand renewable energy capacity in the United Arab Emirates. The partnership aims to develop 30 gigawatts (GW) of solar power along with 8 GW of battery energy storage systems by 2030. This is one of the largest clean energy plans in the region and reflects the country’s growing focus on sustainability.
The plan is part of the UAE’s long-term strategy to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and shift towards cleaner energy sources. Solar power will play a key role in this transition, helping the country lower its carbon emissions and meet global climate targets. At the same time, the addition of large-scale battery storage will ensure that solar energy can be used even when sunlight is not available. This will help maintain a stable and reliable electricity supply across the grid.
Battery energy storage systems are important because solar power generation depends on sunlight, which is not constant throughout the day. By storing excess electricity produced during peak sunlight hours, these systems allow energy to be used later, such as at night or during cloudy periods. The collaboration brings together the strengths of both organizations. Masdar has strong experience in building and managing large renewable energy projects around the world, while EWEC plays a key role in managing electricity and water supply in Abu Dhabi. Together, they will work on developing new solar photovoltaic projects and expanding clean energy infrastructure in the country.
The initiative is also expected to bring economic benefits. It will create job opportunities in the renewable energy sector and support the growth of new technologies. As solar capacity increases, the cost of renewable power is likely to fall, making it more competitive compared to traditional energy sources like natural gas.
