The Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, widely known as Masdar, have signed a major agreement to accelerate renewable energy development in the United Arab Emirates. The Collaboration Framework Agreement (CFA) aims to simplify and speed up the planning and execution of large-scale clean energy projects, helping the country move faster toward its sustainability goals.

The agreement was signed by Ahmed Ali Alshamsi and Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi. Both leaders highlighted the importance of closer cooperation to improve project efficiency, especially in building solar power plants and battery energy storage systems. The partnership builds on a strong track record of collaboration between the two companies, including major solar projects such as Al Dhafra, Al Ajban, and Khazna.

One of the key objectives of the agreement is to support Abu Dhabi in achieving 60 percent of its total energy demand from renewable and clean sources by 2035. To meet this target, EWEC plans to expand its solar power capacity to more than 30 gigawatts. In addition, at least 8 gigawatts of battery storage will be integrated into the grid to ensure stability and reliability. These efforts are aligned with the UAE’s long-term goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

The collaboration also focuses on boosting the local economy. The agreement includes measures to increase In-Country Value by promoting the use of local suppliers and services. It also aims to create more opportunities for Emirati professionals by supporting skill development and employment in the clean energy sector.

Officials from both sides said the agreement will enhance energy security while encouraging innovation. By combining EWEC’s experience in energy procurement with Masdar’s global expertise in renewable energy, the partnership is expected to deliver faster and more efficient project execution.

The agreement is also expected to contribute to cleaner water production by reducing reliance on fossil fuels in desalination processes. This aligns with the UAE’s plan to achieve nearly emission-free water production by 2030. Overall, the collaboration marks an important step in building a more sustainable and reliable energy system that can support the country’s future growth.
