Egypt is taking an important step in changing its energy system by focusing on large-scale battery storage to support its growing renewable energy sector. This move is gaining attention as international financial institutions are considering funding multiple Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects in the country. The plan is expected to improve grid stability and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

One of the key developers involved is AMEA Power, a Dubai-based company. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development is currently reviewing a senior debt financing package of around $223.5 million for two major projects by the company. These projects, named Nefertiti and Horus, will be Egypt’s first standalone, utility-scale battery storage facilities. Nefertiti is planned near the Benban Solar Park, while Horus will be located close to the Zafarana wind complex. Together, these projects are expected to provide around 1.5 gigawatt-hours of storage capacity. This will help manage the supply of electricity generated from renewable sources like solar and wind, which can vary depending on weather conditions.

In addition to these developments, the Egyptian government has signed agreements with other private players. One major deal involves the Kemet Group, which plans to build a large project in Nagaa Hammadi. This project will include a 2,000 MW solar power plant along with a 2,000 MWh battery storage system. Such projects are important because they store excess electricity generated during the day and release it when demand increases, especially during evening hours.

The shift towards battery storage is part of Egypt’s broader energy goals. The country aims to generate 42% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030 and increase this share to 65% by 2040. To attract global investors, the government is offering long-term power purchase agreements and sovereign guarantees, making projects more financially secure.

Egypt is also focusing on building a local manufacturing base for battery technology. Plans are underway to establish the country’s first lithium-ion battery factory through international partnerships. This step is expected to create jobs, reduce costs, and strengthen the local supply chain.

With strong support from global lenders and private companies, Egypt is moving quickly to modernize its energy sector. The expansion of battery storage will play a key role in ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply while supporting the country’s transition to clean energy.
