Indore Municipal Corporation has brought a 60 MW captive solar power plant online in Khargone district, adding a new municipal-scale clean energy model to India's renewable energy market. According to SolarQuarter, the project was largely financed through green bonds and is designed to support the city's Narmada water pumping operations, one of the civic body's major electricity loads.
The plant is expected to reduce monthly power expenses by replacing a portion of conventional grid consumption with solar generation. Officials have also linked the project to broader climate goals, including annual carbon emission reductions and potential carbon credit revenue.
For urban local bodies, the project highlights how renewable energy procurement, public finance and essential municipal services can be combined. If the model performs as planned, similar cities may look more closely at captive solar projects to manage operating costs and improve long-term energy resilience.
