Nagpur Metro Tests Inter-Track Solar Model at Hingna Depot
Time:2026-04-30 Click:10

Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation has commissioned an inter-track solar pilot at Nagpur Metro's Hingna Depot, placing photovoltaic modules in the space between active metro tracks. SolarQuarter reported that the 50 kWp installation covers a 200-metre stretch and is expected to generate close to 70,000 units of electricity each year.

The power will be used for internal depot consumption, helping reduce dependence on grid electricity while turning previously unused infrastructure space into a clean energy asset. The project also required careful equipment selection so that the panels can operate safely around train movement and maintenance activity.

For urban transit operators, the pilot is notable because it expands the idea of solar deployment beyond rooftops and stations. If performance and safety results are positive, inter-track solar could become another option for metro systems seeking lower operating emissions.
