The Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) has commissioned the Itimpi Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Park in Kitwe, making it the largest solar power facility in Zambia so far. The launch of the project marks an important development in the country’s renewable energy sector and reflects Zambia’s growing efforts to reduce dependence on hydroelectric power generation.

The Itimpi Solar PV Park has an installed generation capacity of 60 megawatts (MW). The electricity generated from the facility is expected to support thousands of households as well as industrial operations in the Copperbelt region, which is widely known as the center of Zambia’s mining activities. The project forms part of CEC’s broader renewable energy strategy aimed at strengthening the national power supply and improving energy security.

Officials present during the commissioning ceremony stated that the project was completed through major investments and the use of advanced solar technology. The solar park includes thousands of photovoltaic panels installed across a large area. The facility also uses solar tracking systems that allow the panels to follow the movement of the sun during the day, helping improve electricity generation efficiency and ensuring stable performance during peak demand periods.

The project is also expected to contribute to Zambia’s environmental and sustainability goals. By increasing the use of solar energy, the country can reduce carbon emissions linked to traditional power generation methods and support cleaner industrial operations. This is especially important for the mining sector, which is increasingly focusing on sustainable and environmentally responsible practices.

Apart from energy production, the development of the Itimpi Solar Park created economic opportunities for local communities. During the construction phase, the project generated hundreds of jobs for local workers and provided technical training opportunities. These activities helped support local businesses and improve skills development in the region.

Zambia has long depended on hydropower for more than 80 percent of its electricity generation. However, reduced rainfall and lower water levels at major dams such as Kariba have caused frequent electricity shortages in recent years. The introduction of large-scale solar projects is therefore seen as an important step toward diversifying the country’s energy mix and improving power reliability.

CEC has also indicated plans to further expand its renewable energy portfolio in the future. The successful commissioning of the Itimpi Solar PV Park is expected to serve as a model for upcoming solar and wind energy projects in Zambia. Through partnerships with government authorities and private investors, the company aims to support the country’s long-term energy transition and strengthen its position in Africa’s clean energy development.
