ScottishPower Energy Networks (SPEN), the distribution arm of ScottishPower and part of the Iberdrola Group in the United Kingdom, has received approval from Ofgem for early funding of approximately €173 million (£150 million). The funding will enable the company to begin developing two strategic electricity transmission projects in Scotland.

The approved projects are the Tealing to Kincardine Upgrade Project (TKUP) and the Denny to Wishaw Network Upgrade (DWNO). Both initiatives fall under the Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) framework, which aims to fast-track critical network improvements across Great Britain.

They are also included in the company’s RIIO-T3 plan, the next regulatory period focused on delivering long-term, modernised infrastructure for the electricity system.These upgrades will increase the capacity of Scotland’s transmission network, strengthen resilience and support the integration of additional renewable energy sources into the grid.

As electricity demand continues to grow and electrification becomes central to the UK’s energy transition, the projects are expected to play an important role in meeting the country’s Clean Power 2030 targets. With this investment, Iberdrola reinforces its commitment to advancing a more efficient, reliable and environmentally sustainable energy system that is prepared to meet the long-term needs of consumers.
